Brick Seal: Protection, Longevity, and Visual Enhancement

What is a brick seal?

A brick seal is a protective coating applied to brick, mortar, or brick slip surfaces to guard against moisture, staining, and environmental damage. It works by creating a barrier that helps keep water out while preserving the appearance of the brickwork. Brick seal products are available in clear, matte, or gloss finishes, allowing you to choose a natural look or a subtle sheen.

Why sealing brickwork is important

  • Moisture defence: Reduces water absorption, helping to prevent frost damage and efflorescence.

  • Stain resistance: Makes it harder for dirt, algae, and pollutants to penetrate the surface.

  • UV protection: Helps maintain the original colour of the bricks over time.

  • Ease of cleaning: Dirt and grime are easier to wash away when the surface is sealed.

Types of brick seal

  • Penetrating seal: Absorbs into the brick, creating an invisible shield while allowing the wall to breathe.

  • Surface seal: Forms a visible coating, often used when a glossy or enhanced finish is desired.

  • Breathable seal: Designed for older or traditional brickwork where moisture movement must be maintained.

Using brick seal with brick slips

At Slips from Stock, our brick slips can be protected with a brick seal to maintain their appearance and durability for years to come. Sealing is especially beneficial for external installations or in areas where spills and stains are likely.

Application tips:

  • Always start with a clean, dry surface.

  • Test on a small area to check the finish before sealing the full wall.

  • Apply evenly with a brush, roller, or sprayer.

  • Reapply as recommended by the manufacturer to maintain protection.

A brick seal is more than just a finishing product. It is an investment in keeping brickwork looking its best while extending its life, whether used on a garden wall, a building facade, or a feature wall clad in brick slips.
