  • The Correct Way To Prime Your Walls Before Adding Brick Slips

Surface Preparation is Key

Do You Need To Prime Walls Before Installing Brick Slips?

Priming walls is an essential step before applying brick slips. It helps create a smooth, even surface for the adhesive to adhere and can enhance the appearance and durability of your walls. If you’re not familiar with the process, don’t worry! Follow these steps to prime your walls like a pro.

Before you start priming, gather all the supplies you’ll need. These include:

Paintbrush or roller
Painter’s tape
Cleaning supplies (soap and water, degreaser, etc.)

Step 1 – Clean the walls

Make sure your walls are clean before starting. This enables the primer to stick properly. If there are any visible marks on the wall, make sure to clean them with soap and water. You may also need to use a degreaser to get rid of any tough stains. Let the walls dry completely before proceeding.

Step 3 – Sand the walls

Use sandpaper to smoothen any rough or uneven areas on the wall’s surface. This can help create a smoother finished surface. Also, if you’re planning on installing brick slips over a previously painted surface, sanding will allow the new primer to adhere better.

Step 5 – Apply the primer

It’s important to choose the correct primer for your needs (oil-based or water-based) and ensure it suits the surface you’re priming. We make it super easy by providing a pretty universal primer that can be used on all wall types. Apply the primer directly to the wall with a brush or roller. Be sure to apply an even coat and avoid leaving brush marks or roller streaks. Take care not to over-apply, and avoid having drip marks.

Step 6 – Let the primer dry

Allow the primer to dry completely, typically at least four hours. The drying of the primer enhances its adhesive properties.

Step 7 – Examine the surface

Inspect the walls after the primer has dried to ensure there are no visible streaks, drips, or uneven surface areas. Once you are satisfied with the surface’s smoothness, you can now apply your desired brick slips, knowing your walls will look their best.

In conclusion, priming walls ensures a long-lasting, brick slip installation. By following these simple steps, you’ll be able to achieve a smooth, professional-looking surface, with a flawless final look.
