This is a question that many might ask and it is a valid question given that many homes are now made using internal walls cladded prepared plasterboard. The good news is that it is possible to fit brick slips directly onto plasterboard, enabling you to install brick slips wherever you want.
As with every job, you will need to plan in advance and the good news is that plasterboards won’t need to be plastered beforehand. In fact, if you want your brick slips to stick to the walls, then you will need to make sure that the subsurface is solid and secure. This is because the strength of your brickslips is only as strong as the surface they are fitted to.
What Are The Advantages of Fixing to Plasterboards?
The great thing about plasterboards is that they provide a smooth and flat surface to fit brick slips too. This gives you the perfect base in which to achieve a perfect finish as there will be no uneven areas, making installation quick and easy. You will find that levelling the brick slips and courses will be easier and you will also need less adhesive although you will need to apply a few coats of our Brick Slip Primer to the plasterboards before fitting the brick slips in place.
What About the Plasterboard Sizes?
We recommend that you should opt for either 12.5mm plasterboards or the 15mm plasterboards when installing brick slips on them. Most plasterboards have a size of 1200mm x 2400 mm which makes them ideal for 600mm centres on stud work. If the work is completed by a qualified joiner and is structurally sound then this subsurface will work perfectly with your brick slips.
Prepare the Surface
The thing that you will need to consider, as mentioned, is the importance of preparing the surface. You will need to make sure that the surface is free of dust and is primed with PVA. When the surface is dusty, it will absorb moisture from the adhesive. This is also true for the plasterboard as it is very absorbent. Should you not follow this part of the installation process, you will find that the adhesive won’t do its job. The plasterboard will end up sucking moisture from the adhesive and that means that you might find that your brick slips begin falling off the wall.
The good news is that once you have your plasterboard walls ready and prepped, they are ready to begin taking your brick slips. This should be an enjoyable job that requires time and care. Don’t rush it or mix too much adhesive beforehand as this could mean that you run out of adhesive. Plan your design and how you want it to look and then begin the process. Once finished, give your brick slips a seal and then take a step back and look at the job you have completed because it is certain to give your home a new look.
One thing to bare in mind, if you are using regular plasterboard as opposed to moisture resistant plasterboard is that brick slips are porous so we would advise using our brick slip sealer to prevent water penetration.
